US: Apple Store workers vote to strike

Union workers at an Apple store in the US state of Maryland have called a strike. A union representative said about 98 percent of workers at the Towson City store who participated in a poll yesterday voted to strike.

Year-long negotiations with Apple management have led to “unsatisfying results”, the IAM union said on Saturday. If the strike does happen, it will be the first of its kind at Apple Group's US business.

Another round of negotiations for about 100 Apple Store employees is scheduled for May 21, but the strike could happen before then.

“Issues at the forefront of this action include work-life balance, unpredictable scheduling practices that interfere with personal lives and wages that are not commensurate with the cost of living in the area,” the union said. Apple has yet to respond to AFP's request for comment.

Meanwhile, workers at another Apple store in New Jersey voted against the union on Saturday.

American tech giants are often anti-union

Employees of the Towson store were the first Apple Store employees to form a union in June 2022.

The US Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has received several complaints accusing Apple of trying to discourage its employees from forming unions. In general, US tech companies, especially the shipping giant Amazon, are considered anti-union.
