USA – Biden is expected to announce his candidacy again on Tuesday

Expected re-election bid – and disinterested voters: US President Joe Biden could announce his bid for a second term in the White House on Tuesday. According to media reports, the 80-year-old US Democrat will officially announce in a video that he wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election. This has not been officially confirmed yet.

Biden is already the oldest president in US history — and will be 86 at the end of his second term. So many American voters are critical of the president’s renewed candidacy: according to a poll published by American broadcaster NBC on Sunday, 70 percent of those surveyed believe Biden should not run again. His Democratic supporters are 51 percent.

Among voters opposed to running for re-election, nearly half cite Biden’s age as a key reason for their opinion. The president has long had approval ratings above 40 percent.

No enemies in sight

Biden had already signaled his desire to seek a second term after a successful November midterm election for Democrats. US media reported last week that he plans to release a video on Tuesday. Today marks exactly four years since Biden entered the presidential race against then-President Donald Trump.

In the United States, presidents have a tradition of running for a second term. Biden is unlikely to have serious intra-party rivals in the presidential primary. So far, two obvious outliers — anti-vaccine Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and self-help author Marianne Williamson — have said they want to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Among the opposition Republicans, Trump and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley have so far officially announced their presidential candidacies. Primary elections will begin early next year, followed by a presidential election in November 2024. (apa/afp)
