Before the expected flooding, important demolition work on the partially collapsed Carula Bridge over the Elbe River in Dresden has been completed. This was confirmed by fire department spokesman Michael Klahr. This affects the part of the bridge on the Neustadt bank. This means that the work has been completed faster than initially planned. The original target was Sunday evening. Part of the bridge is still in the Elbe River.
The clean-up operation on the banks of the Elbe has been completed, Kalahri told the German Press Agency. In the evening, the machines should be removed from the bank area.
Emergency services are working hard to clear the bank due to the imminent flood risk. Parts of the bridge have been cut up and removed by truck. Two rescue vehicles from the German army were also on the scene to provide support. A video was posted on platform X showing a tank pushing the rubble aside.
According to the state flood center, the water level is expected to reach four meters in the Elbe River in Dresden on Sunday morning. Work on the bank is then no longer possible. The area is of great importance during the upcoming flood because the current must travel through the part of the river that is in the water, explained the head of the Dresden Environmental Office, René Herold.
The part of the bridge that fell into the Elbe on Wednesday is still in place for now. According to current estimates, it has little impact on the water level. According to the head of the road and civil engineering department, Simon Prüfer, it can only be removed after the floods have subsided. The demolition plan is underway.
