A song about the world, which becomes an expression of an entire era, of an attitude to life: “The Girl from Ipanema”, forever associated with the plaintive voice of Astrud Gilberto.

It was by chance that it became her hit – when she was recording her husband Joao Gilberto’s album with Stan Getz in New York in 1963, someone was needed on short notice who could sing “A Garota de Ipanema” in English. She was the only one to consider. So the anecdote, which may have missed Astrud Gilberto a bit – she actually started singing before that.

She did not stop at the song, which achieved worldwide success and made Astrud Gilberto the first Grammy winner for Song of the Year – she recorded a dozen and a half solo albums, many recordings were made in collaboration with famous jazz musicians: Antonio Carlos Jobim, Stanley Turrentine, Walter Wanderley, Chet Baker .. However, she was and still is known as the face and voice of bossa nova.

Astrud Evangelina Weinert was born the daughter of a German father and a Brazilian mother on March 29, 1940 in Salvador de Bahia — like many musicians who were to shape Brazilian music. For twenty years he lived in seclusion from the stage. On June 5, she passed away at the age of 83.
