Billionaire Richard Branson’s space company Virgin Galactic has been allowed to take tourists into space. The US aviation authority granted the FAA the appropriate permission, Virgin Galactic announced. She evaluated test flight data of the Virgin space plane “VSS Unity” with pilots in May.
With the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration, the race between three billionaires for tourist flights into space has heated up. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos wants to fly into space himself with a rocket from his company, Blue Origin. The start date is set for July 20. It’s unclear if Virgin Galactic can start now even earlier. Tesla subsidiary Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans to launch its first flight with space tourists by the end of the year. So far, astronauts have already traveled to the ISS with SpaceX.
Virgin Galactic stock jumped about a third at times after the announcement of the FAA’s permit.
