After the first strike by Boeing aircraft in the United States in 16 years, talks between the company's management and employees are scheduled to resume at the beginning of the week. As the American Arbitration Board FMCS announced yesterday (local time), the discussions will be held with an arbitrator. The workers had previously overwhelmingly rejected an agreement already reached on wage increases.
The strike at Boeing began last night. The employer's already negotiated offer of a 25 percent wage increase was rejected by employees with 94.6 percent of the vote, and even 96 percent of union members voted in favor of the strike.
Boeing's last strike, in 2008, lasted 57 days. Since then, the collective agreement, which expired last Thursday, has also come into effect, and the subsequent agreement has been the subject of a struggle between management and the IAM union for several months. The demands of the workforce to compensate for the losses of the past few years are significant: a 40 percent increase in funds and the reintroduction of pension systems. Yesterday, the company's management indicated its readiness to return to the negotiating table.
