Car tariff failure: Germany has to pay 243 million euros

The cost of failed cars is very expensive in Germany. After an arbitration procedure, the Federal Republic has to pay €243 million in compensation, Austrian tariff operator Kapsch TrafficCom announced today. In the summer of 2019, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) annulled the plans pushed by the conservative CSU because the planned tax discriminated against foreign car owners.

Austrian specialist Kapsch and ticket marketer CTS Eventim, who founded the joint venture autoTicket for collection, have received orders worth billions for toll collection and electronic ticket issuance.

The settlement proposal has been approved

After the European Court of Justice struck down the German fee plans, they originally claimed around €560 million in damages in the arbitration proceedings. CTS Eventim explained that the two companies and Germany have agreed to the settlement proposal submitted by the arbitral tribunal.

So the autoTicket should be paid 243 million euros – the joint venture of toll specialist Kapsch and ticket provider Eventim should be the operator responsible for car tariffs.

With the payment, “mutual claims from the operator’s contract will be settled and compared,” Kabish explained. The comparison agreement is expected to be finalized and implemented in the coming days and thus become effective.
