In Germany, rail travelers in the run-up to Christmas should be prepared for train cancellations and delays on the second weekend of Advent. Today, the GDL Train Drivers Union announced a national strike, starting tomorrow evening until Friday evening. The strike is scheduled to begin at 6 pm in freight traffic and at 10 pm in passenger traffic. It ends on Friday evening at 10 pm.
“Employer side obstructs”
In addition to Deutsche Bahn, the strike also applies to regional train operators Transdev, AKN Eisenbahn and Citybahn Chemnitz. “Employers are obstructing work everywhere and are unwilling to give employees the appreciation and recognition they deserve for the work they have done,” GDL said, justifying the strike. The railway’s human resources director, Martin Seiler, described the strike as unnecessary and selfish. It ruins the coming weekend for millions of people.
At the end of November, GDL broke off negotiations with the railways and announced another strike. But she hasn’t mentioned the time yet. At the same time, the GDL has launched an indefinite strike ballot, the results of which should be available before Christmas. The GDL does not want to strike over the Christmas period, but has not specified the period more precisely.
