There are 28 different types of collagen in the human body. The protein, which can in turn be broken down into hundreds of essential amino acids, has been detected in skin, teeth, cartilage, bones, tendons and ligaments. The purpose of the protein molecule is its stability: collagen fibers ensure that the skin is firm and able to regenerate, and that the joints remain flexible. However: With age, the fibers become fewer and break, leading to wrinkle formation, osteoarthritis, inflexible tendons, and articular development.
