After years of negotiations, Germany recognizes the atrocities committed in the colonial era in what is now Namibia at the beginning of the twentieth century as genocide. “In light of Germany’s historical and moral responsibility, we will ask forgiveness from Namibia and the descendants of the victims,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Friday. After more than five years it was possible to reach an agreement on reconciliation.
This includes, according to Maas, that the events of the German colonial era in Namibia today, in particular the atrocities committed against the Herero and Nama ethnic groups from 1904 to 1908, were called genocide without neglect or disguise.
