The first world championships in Riga are only a day old and they already have their first big surprise. Hosts Latvia beat Canada this evening.

But Canada and its young team in Group B lost surprisingly 2-0 to the host country Latvia, which was under the auspices of Canadian coach Bob Hartley. This was Latvians’ first success against a 26-time world champion. Mix Endrasis (minute 20) and Oscars Batna (29) scored two Latvian goals. She traveled Canada to Latvia almost exclusively with the NHL Professionals, but with a lesser known young team.

A Russian team kicked off the World Ice Hockey Championship in Riga on Friday, with little success. The Russians also defeated the highly-rated Czechs 4: 3 after a goal by Michael Grigorenko 19 seconds before the end. In the second match of the first group, Slovakia succeeded in a safe 5-2 victory over Belarus.
