Waltraud Mayer says goodbye to Italy

On her 66th birthday, soprano Mayer will bid farewell to Italian theater with a concert at La Scala in Milan.

German soprano star Waltraud Mayer will bid farewell to Italian theater on January 9, her 66th birthday, with a concert at La Scala in Milan with bass Günther Grosbock and pianist Josef Brinell. Scala announced in a press release Monday that the tracks for Rott, Brackner, Wolf and Mahler will perform.

“I always like to pick not only the right moments, but also the right places to say goodbye,” Mayer said in an interview to be published in the January issue of Scala magazine. “There is no better theater than La Scala to bid farewell to Italy, to which I will certainly return differently, certainly as a spectator,” said the singer.

The mezzo-soprano made her debut in La Scala in 1987 as a lady in Paul Hindemith’s “Cardillac” under Wolfgang Sawallisch and in Mozart’s “Requiem” under Riccardo Muti. Her most recent impressive appearance in La Scala was ‘Electra’, directed by Patrice Chereau and directed by Issa-Pekka Salonen in 2014 and Christoph von Donnie in 2018.
