Background information about the end of music | MON | 02/27/2023 | 9:45

Music is an art for time, it covers a certain period of time in the game, in interpretation. It also means that it is completely cliché, with a beginning and an end. But how do you get to the end? Through an increase in tempo and dynamics, through a harmonious ending, through a soft fade? What possibilities do musicians and composers have for finding a suitable ending, and what conventions are they subject to?

Swiss-Austrian jazz trio Röhm-Scherrer-Eberle string together strings of jazz in a masterful two-and-a-half minute piece, “The End Is Near.” The author of this piece, Peter Romm, points out that there is always something to add to music. It will likely never be completed. Philosopher Konrad Paul Liessmann muses on the particular rhythm of music: it lifts us above our everyday perception of time. Also, time in music doesn’t just progress linearly. It thrives on repetition and changes, on playing with audience expectations.
