Dual Use: Church Opens Nursery

The need for places to educate and care for children is constantly growing. In order to meet this trend, twelve new nurseries have been created in the Sajel-Boyt area. Shortly before the start of the new nursery year, members of the education committee and kindergarten directors had to work themselves: sawing, painting, cleaning and gardening to get the new rooms ready for use in time. This is in the church.

Telfs. The decision to establish the new nurseries was taken unanimously by the local council at the beginning of February. “All the elements have been put together so that regular operations can begin at the beginning of September,” explains Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Education Committee Johannes Augustin. Thanks to the commitment of all stakeholders and the support of the federal and state governments, the new places can now be put into operation.

Hertz-Gesu Emergency Church as New Site

The new building is located in the Herz-Jesu Notkirche, behind the M-Preis in Sagl. The emergency church is now used twice: the hall has been converted into a community room, and the church room is available as an additional room for the daycare centre. Access remains unrestricted for church visitors on weekends.

Extensive renovations

In addition to the creation of new nursery spaces, extensive renovation work was also carried out. “The floors and heating were replaced, new sanitary facilities were installed, and the group room received a new kitchen,” says Daniela Weistenauer, head of the education department. In order to make the rooms brighter, the round windows in the church facade, which had been covered with wooden slats, were cut out. To do this, Deputy Mayor Augustin and the kindergarten directors themselves stepped in and grabbed a jigsaw and a pot of paint.
Morning care times are particularly in demand at the moment. The new daycare places are open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and offer a flexible care solution for working parents. Three carers, led by Anna Thöni, look after the younger children. As usual, places are allocated by the City of Telfs based on registrations already available for the year 2024/25.
