Sofie Royer can be considered a clown on the cover of her new album. According to the Austrian-American musician of Iranian descent, the mask acts as protection so that she can share her songs above the character. Beneath the album’s surface lies her exploration of the journey between adolescence and adulthood.

Born in Los Angeles, she moved to Vienna at the age of 12, where she studied classical violin before moving to pursue her career between London, New York and Los Angeles: as a violinist, she founded DJ of Boiler Room – a platform for DJ sets – and works for Stones Throw. She has also released two albums.

Their debut, “Cult Survivor” of 2020, was distinctive and inspired by eccentrics like Gary Wilson, Todd Rundgren and Serge Gainsbourg, and they’re still a bit conservative. Their second album, “Harlequin,” oscillates between lavish instrumental pop songs and simple piano ballads, with the background of which echoes the magic of an ’80s sound.

Miniature dramas and existential crises unfold on their illustrious stage, featuring inquisitive characters such as Habsburg Prince Rudolf, Manson supporter Bobby Beausoleil, and singer Jane Birkin. With gentle and melancholy vocals, Sofie Royer invites you into the closet of her dreams.
