Stage 20 of the Tour de France 2024: Pogacar wins stage 5

General Commander Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won the fifth stage of the 2024 Tour de France on the Col de la Couillole. At the end of stage 20 he won the mountain sprint against Jonas Vingegaard (Visma | Rent a bike). Richard Carapaz (EF Education – EasyPost) was third on the 132.8km between Nice and the Col de la Couillole, the last remaining member of a breakaway group. Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step) was fourth, 53 seconds behind. For a long time, the stage featured a strong breakaway group, the last of which was caught about two kilometres below the summit.

In the overall standings, only the top three have changed in terms of time. Pogacar now leads Vingegaard by 5:14 minutes. He has in turn built his lead over Evenepoel to 2:50 minutes before the final time trial.

This is how the 20th stage of the Tour de France 2024 took place

As expected, there were a lot of attacks at the start. Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno-X) started the race, followed by other riders, but no real group emerged. On the climb to the Col de Braus, Wilco Kelderman (Visma | Lease a Bike) broke away. Bruno Armeril (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) followed. Enric Mas (Movistar) jumped to the front of the pair shortly after.

Two groups formed behind them. The chasers with Jan Tratnik (Visma | Bike Rental) Marc Soler (UAE) Clement Champoussin (Arkea B&B Hotels) Romain Bardet (DSM-unternehmenich PostNL) and Richard Carapaz (EF Education – EasyPost). And the chasers of the chasers with Kevin Gennitz (Groupama – FDJ) Jasper Stuyven (Lidl – Trek) Nelson Pauwels (EF Education – EasyPost) Nance Peters (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) and Tobias Johansson (Uno-X Mobility). The remaining small peloton was led by the UAE Team Emirates.

On the ascent to the Col de Turini, the chasers caught up with the front. 1.3 kilometres below the summit, Kevin Jennets, Jasper Stuyven and Tobias Johannessen also reached the front.

Above the summit of Torigny, Soudal-Quick Step took the lead and put pressure on. In the constellation we went to the third mountain of the day – the Col de la Colmiane. There were several attacks in the leading group, but no one was able to break away decisively. Only Ameriel had to give up, but he came back on the descent.

At the start of the final mountain, the Col de la Couillole, the gap between the peloton and the breakaway group was just under three minutes. At the front were Jan Tratnik, Wilco Kelderman, Marc Soler, Jasper Stuyven, Kevin Gennitz, Bruno Armeril, Richard Carapaz, Enric Mas, Romain Bardet and Tobias Haaland Johansson.

Under the rhythm of Jan Tratnik, the group was reduced. With 13.8 kilometres remaining, there were only six riders at the front: Kelderman, Stuyven, Carapaz, Mas, Bardet and Johannesen. Soler returned shortly after.

Mas and Carapaz attacked with 11.4km to go and it seemed only Bardet could follow them. At the back of the Gc Riders field, Landa was narrowing the group.

Then the double act. At the summit 7.3, Carapaz attacked, but Mas held on. In the yellow jersey group, Evenepoel attacked, leaving only Vingegaard and Pogacar. The same thing happened after 2.5 km. Initially without a result, Vingegaard responded and only Pogacar went with him. Vingegaard quickly gained ground at Evenepoel.

With 2.5 kilometres to go, Pogacar and Vingegaard caught up with the leading duo. After 500 metres, Mas had to give up. With 900 metres to go, Carapaz could no longer hold on to Pogacar’s rear wheel. With 150 metres to go, Pogacar was no longer able to resist. Vingegaard immediately resigned and conceded defeat.
