There is no end to the series of earthquakes in Iceland

Series of earthquakes continue in Iceland. Between midnight and 6 a.m. (local time, 7 a.m. Central European Time) on Sunday, authorities recorded about 880 earthquakes, according to the radio. However, a volcanic eruption is likely to occur on the Reykjanes Peninsula, southwest of the capital Reykjavik.

Grindavik was evacuated

However, data from the night showed no change in the magma chambers and did not indicate that activity was approaching the surface. After a multi-day quake – a specific form of a series of earthquakes – authorities evacuated the town of Grindavik, home to about 3,700 people, and also closed the nearby Blue Lagoon, the island’s most popular tourist attraction in the North Atlantic. Pictures taken from the area show deep cracks in the streets and meter-wide holes in the ground. Significant damage to homes is expected. The Icelandic government wanted to discuss the situation at midday.

The new earthquake swarm began about two and a half weeks ago. Since then, thousands of earthquakes have occurred. Volcanic eruptions have already occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula in 2021, 2022 and this summer. Each of them was announced by a longer series of earthquakes. There was no danger to populated areas in all three explosions.
