Austrian handball players will meet defending champions Norway, Slovenia and Slovakia in Group E at the European Championships (November 28 to December 15).
This was the result of the draw for the tournament, which was organized jointly with Hungary and Switzerland on Thursday in Vienna.
Team president Monique Tegstermann's red, white and red squad will play its group matches at the Innsbruck Olympic Hall. The final main round will take place in the Wiener Stadthalle.
It is the Austrian women's ninth participation in the European Championships, and the first since 2008. In the domestic tournament, Katarina Pandza and her partners are looking to improve under the leadership of new team president Tegstermann.
“I think every group is difficult. I think it's OK with Slovakia and Slovenia,” Tegsterman said, saying that reaching the main round was his goal. However, the first four matches under successor Herbert Müller were lost to current group rivals Norway (twice), Hungary and Switzerland.
The 24 teams participating in the European Championship have been divided into six groups, each made up of four teams, each of which will play two in Innsbruck, Debrecen and Basel.
The top two teams from Groups A, B and C in the preliminary round will play their main round matches in Debrecen, while the teams from Groups D, E and F will play in Vienna, where the final weekend is also held.
These are the groups for the 2024 European Women's Handball Championship:
Group I (Debrecen): Sweden, Hungary, North Macedonia, Türkiye
Group II (Debrecen): Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Czech Republic
The third group (Basel): France, Spain, Poland, Portugal,
Fourth group (Basel): Denmark, Switzerland, Croatia, Faroe Islands
Group Five (Innsbruck): Norway, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia
Group Six (Innsbruck): Netherlands, Germany, Iceland, Ukraine
