Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced retaliation after new Russian attacks on the Black Sea city of Odessa. “Missiles against peaceful cities, against apartment buildings, against a cathedral… There can be no excuse for Russian evil,” Zelensky wrote on his Telegram channel today. “As always, this evil will also lose. And there will certainly be revenge on the Russian terrorists in Odessa.
Russia canceled a grain deal with Ukraine on Monday amid international outcry and has bombed Odessa every day since then.
The huge city played a major role in the export of foodstuffs across the Black Sea. According to Ukrainian sources, a total of 19 Russian missiles and cruise missiles were launched during the attacks, which took place at night. The air defense managed to hold back nine of them.
The Transfiguration Cathedral was also damaged
According to the Ukrainian authorities, one person was killed and 19 others were injured in the attacks. In addition, the port infrastructure, residential buildings and the Transfiguration Cathedral, which is a landmark of the city, were damaged. Despite the well-documented damage, the Russian Ministry of Defense later denied responsibility for the church’s destruction.
The head of the military department in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, Pavlo Kirilenko, also reported a Russian cluster munition attack on the city of Chasev Yar.
