There will be an anniversary next year: the first Swedish success will be exactly 50 years ago. In 1974, legendary pop group ABBA conquered the European competition in Brighton, England with the song “Waterloo”. The success suddenly made Aba internationally known – a global career followed.
The ESC 2024 final will be held on May 11 at Malmö Arena, the two semi-finals on May 7 and 9.
Sweden has already won seven times
The Scandinavian country has already won the European Union seven times at the Economic and Social Council. For Lauren, this was ESC’s second victory after 2012 when she triumphed in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, with the song “Euphoria”.
Four Swedish cities have expressed interest in hosting the music competition in May 2024: the capital Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmo and the small town Örnsköldsvik. Swedish media reported on Friday that Gothenburg and Örnsköldsvik had already received cancellations from the organizers – so there was a showdown between Stockholm and Malmö. However, the argument against Stockholm was that the Avicii Arena will be extensively renovated in 2024.
Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and is located in the very south of the country. She has hosted the ESC twice, first in 1992 and then again in 2013 after Lorraine’s first success. Malmö, Sweden, has been highlighted as a potential host who can throw a grand celebration while keeping costs down.
“Malmö is a creative city with a rich cultural life that can create a music festival for the whole of Europe in a sustainable way,” said SVT President Hanna Stearn. This is especially true from an economic point of view, as the arena, communications and logistics are already in place.
The fact that the southern Swedish city is hosting ESC 2024 should bring joy to neighboring Denmark: Malmö can be reached within three-quarters of an hour by train from nearby Danish capital Copenhagen.
