Greetings from the premiere of “Don Giovanni” at the Salzburg Film Festival

The opera premiere of this year’s Salzburg Festival ended with a joyous 13-minute long Monday night at the Großer Festspielhaus. “Don Giovanni” produced and directed by Romeo Castellucci by Teodor Currentzis was announced as the highlight of this year’s programme – and it partly met high expectations. The director, who created the thriller “Salome” here in 2018, loaded Mozart’s opera with an abundance of ideas.

In the first act, the show focuses primarily on adding several picture puzzles to the well-known plot about the killer and murderer Don Giovanni in the empty church room (which is freed from all Christian symbols in a long silent preface to the introduction). The second part focuses on the much-discussed, 150-woman silent choir of Salzburg previously, who created Cindy van Ackern’s highly intricate choreography that often blocks the plot.

The show runs for four hours (including the intermission), also due to Theodor Krentzis, who rarely ramps up the Aeterna orchestra dramatically and pushes the action forward, but publishes the musical material calmly and with great sense. This Don Giovanni aims for a larger group – which, of course, is costing him a lot of momentum. The singing performances were steady to excellent, and most of the cheers went to “Donna Anna” Nadezhda Pavlova, Anna Lucia Richter as Zerlina and Federica Lombardi as Donna Elvira. For the director, there was not only a lot of applause, but also a shriek or two.

There are five Don Giovanni shows still on the show until August 20. There are still tickets left.
