Tea with Paddington Br: The Queen Shows Humor

Tea with Paddington Br: The Queen Shows Humor

In the video released on Saturday, the 96-year-old can be seen in an impressive room in her palace at a table with children’s book character Paddington Br. With tea served in fine china, Paddington pulls a jam sandwich out of his old red hat.

“I always have one for emergencies,” says the Queen’s animatronic bear. “I will too,” answered Elizabeth II, and with a smile pulled two slices of toast with red jam between them from her handbag. “Later,” she adds to the stunned Paddington, and puts the sandwich back in her bag.

Meanwhile, the noise of a cheering crowd penetrates the palace from outside and a palace official says to the Queen: “The celebration is about to begin, Your Majesty.” Then Paddington turned his hat again and wished the Queen: “Congratulations on your anniversary, madam!” With a touching look from his brown rusty eyes, he adds, “And thanks. For everything!”

The video was reportedly filmed at Windsor Castle in March. Only a few members of the royal family were privy to the top-secret project.

James Bond visit

This isn’t the first time the Queen has shown off a British sense of humor in this way. Ten years ago I starred in a video for the opening ceremony of the London Olympics. She was visited by James Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and she climbed into a helicopter with the famous secret agent 007 and then jumped – apparently – to the Olympic Stadium with a parachute.

In 2016, Elizabeth II starred with Prince Harry in a promotional humorous video for the Invictus Games for Disabled Veterans, created by her grandson.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is celebrated for four days in the United Kingdom. After her appearance on Thursday at the military parade “Trooping the Color” on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, the Queen canceled appointments scheduled for Friday and Saturday due to health reasons.
