Religious tolerance, Christian virtues and human values
In the middle of an oratorio by George Friedrich Handel Theodora A woman of striking determination stands, alarming from today’s point of view. For Theodora, a princess who converted to Christianity, the world of this world meant nothing compared to the promise of eternal salvation. She refuses to worship Jupiter as ordered by the Roman Emperor and dies for her religious freedom. By turning the external drama of the traditional martyr myth inward in a work that premiered in London in 1750, George Frideric Handel and his librettist Thomas Morell created a meditative work on religious tolerance, Christian virtues and human values, making the former master of the martyr’s effective first opera seria inspiring a core Musically unprecedented.
