The stage star and “Mrs. Vejvoda” from “A Real Viennese Never Dies” has died at the age of 91.
Julia Gesnitzer died on Wednesday at the age of 91. Your agency confirmed a report from the online edition of “Tiroler Tageszeitung” to the Austrian Press Agency on Friday evening. She added that the funeral will be held at her request in the immediate family circle.
Recently, Gschnitzer has lived in Elsbethen, near Salzburg. There she was made an honorary citizen in the run-up to her 90th birthday. Born on December 21, 1931 in Innsbruck, Gesnitzer has been on the stage that means the world since her debut at the Tyroler Theater in 1951 until her ripe old age. The role of Jedermann’s mother at the Salzburg Festival, which she has held since 2013, was essentially the culmination of an otherwise unparalleled career.
However, Gschnitzer achieved widespread popularity with the role of “Frau Vejvoda” in the cult series “Real Vienna Doesn’t Go Under” aka “Mundl”. She played the Tyrolean mother of “Nudlaug” Franzi, the friend of Edmund Sackbauer’s daughter Hanni. This made Julia Gschnitzer part of an unforgettable piece of Austrian television history.
